Karl Marx changed worldview: vice president of Belgian Workers' Party

BRUSSELS, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Karl Marx changed the worldview in a general way and it's important to apply Marxism to the realities of today, said David Pestieau, vice president of the Belgian Workers' Party (PTB), in an interview with Xinhua.

"Marx explained that the world is not frozen as it is, and that it can evolve very strongly. I think this is the first very important element. The second element that seems very important to us is that he analyzed capitalism, concluding that it is not a sustainable system," said Pestieau.

But Pestieau believes that Marxism didn't just simply change worldview and analyze capitalism, but instilled hope that the society can be changed.

He brought an intellectual dimension to old static interpretations of society, thus sowing the seeds of socialism that would blossom for decades to come, said Pestieau.

He also stressed the importance of applying Marxism to the realities of today.

Since the financial crisis of 2008, Marxism has already experienced a genetic revival. "Reality has brought Marx back to the fore, especially a re-examination of his economic analysis to understand the 2008 financial crisis," Pestieau explained.

It is in this context that Pestieau coined the terms "Marxism 2.0" to attest to the realities of the 21st century.

This year marks the 170th anniversary of the publication of The Communist Manifesto and the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth.
