KIGALI, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A refugee from a Congo refugee camp on Wednesday succumbed to injuries following Tuesday's clash with the Rwandan police in western Rwanda, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs said.

The deceased refugee had sustained injuries during a confrontation with police on Tuesday, said the ministry in a statement.

"One refugee from Kiziba camp succumbed to his injuries he got when, together with some refugees, he was trying to interfere with police patrols yesterday, May 1. Tear gas used to disperse the said refugees had injured him," said the statement.

The ministry called on refugees not to interfere with Rwandan police patrols for their own security.

The Kiziba camp is one of the five refugee camps in Rwanda. Established in 1996, the camp hosts over 17,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), around 77 percent of which are women and children, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The police on Tuesday said they arrested 23 people for violence related to the Kiziba Refugee Camp in western Rwanda. Several refugees resorted to violence, throwing stones and attacking police officers with sharp objects, leading to Tuesday's arrest of 23 individuals who were handed over to relevant authorities for investigation, said the police.?
