U.S. mayor convenes commission to fight school gun violence

HOUSTON, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Houston mayor convened his Commission Against Gun Violence for the first time Thursday to mull solutions to make schools safer places in the United States' fourth largest city.

"They (schools) ought to be as safe as our governmental buildings or airports," said Sylvester Turner, addressing more than 30 people representing community groups, churches, law enforcement and universities.

The mayor demanded the commission come up with the first set of solutions before school starts after the summer vacation and the second set by December so as to present them to the Texas Legislature in 2019.

The meeting was held following a school shooting at Santa Fe High School two weeks ago when eight students and two teachers were killed.

"How we get there, I can't give you the answers," Turner said.

The mayor said his commission was inspired by students who had joined March for Our Lives, which was a student-led demonstration in support of tighter gun control that took place on March 24 in Washington D.C., with over 800 sibling events throughout the country and around the world.

"It is these students who are part of March for Our Lives movement who pushed me to set up this commission to end gun violence," said Turner.

Also on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump met with the families of the victims of the shooting incident in the Houston high school.
