MELBOURNE, April 19 (Xinhua) -- An unlicensed driver has been charged Sunday after a young man was hit by a car and died outside the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming convention at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Australia a day earlier.
Awer Dau, 33, has faced court accused of dangerous driving, causing the death of a 20-year-old outside the event venue Saturday evening.
Dau is also accused of culpable driving in relation to a second man seriously injured in the collision. The injured man remains in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with significant lower-body injuries.
A third person, who was not physically injured, was taken to hospital suffering "trauma," police said.
This group of three people is believed to be cosplay enthusiasts leaving the event.
The prosecution said it needed 16 weeks until Dau's next court appearance to prepare a toxicology report, mechanical analysis, collision reconstruction, expert opinions, CCTV review, mobile phone analysis and a driver impairment report.
The Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event is being held at the Melbourne Showgrounds during the weekend. The two-day event attracted young people interested in comics, science fiction and fantasy.
The event, expected to attract up to 26,000 attendees over the weekend, paused for a minute's silence at noon on Sunday in tribute to the dead and injured men. ■
