ZAGREB, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Two Croatian police officers were slightly injured on Wednesday after a group of migrants threw rocks and other objects on them as they tried unsuccessfully to cross the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement.

The incident happened at the Maljevac border crossing, near the northwestern Bosnian town of VelikaKladusa where thousands of migrants are set to cross the border and enter the European Union.

On Wednesday morning, a group of migrants broke police cordon and came near the Croatian border. When Bosnian police tried to push them away from the border, some migrants became violent.

Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said on Wednesday that Croatian police had not entered Bosnian territory.

"Migrants who are situated in the Bosnian canton broke the cordon of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian police, came to the Croatian border where they were stopped by Croatian police," Bozinovic explained.

He said that there has been an increase in migration due to Tuesday's fake news that Croatia will open the borders for migrants. "There will always be enough Croatian police at the border to prevent violent or illegal entry into Croatia," the minister said.

In 2015 and 2016, almost a million migrants passed through Croatia on the so-called Balkan Route on their way to western and northern Europe.
