U.S.-LOS ANGELES-OSCARS-BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

(L-R) Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Evan Hayes and Shannon Dill, winners of the Best Documentary Feature award for "Free Solo," pose in the press room during the 91th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, the United States, on Feb. 24, 2019.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- "Free Solo," a documentary directed by Chinese American directors, claimed Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony, or the Oscars, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Free Solo" is directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, both of whom are of Chinese origin.

The film follows elite rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempted an unassisted ascent up the El Capitan vertical rock formation at Yosemite National Park without ropes.

"This film is for everyone who believes in the impossible," Vasarhelyi told the audience.

She thanked National Geographic "for believing in us and for hiring women and people of color because we only help make the films better."

"Free Solo" beat off strong competition from "Hale County This Morning, This Evening," "Minding the Gap," "Of Fathers and Sons" and "RBG."

"Minding the Gap" was also directed by a Chinese American director named Liu Bing. The film follows three young men who bond together to escape their volatile families in a small, Rust Belt hometown in the Midwest. As they face adult responsibilities, unexpected revelations threaten their decade-long friendship.
